Nail Care Do’s and Don’ts
People may think that since nails are just a small part of our body, taking care of them is not that important as others would not easily notice these nails. Contrary to this belief, nails can be easily seen by everyone that we meet and talk to as we use our hands when we communicate. This exposes our nails to be seen very easily even in simple conversation. This is why having good nail care habits is also important in personal grooming.
The basics of nail care that you should keep in mind are keep them trim and clean. This prevents other problems from arising such as cracked nails and infection. Keeping nails trim will also prevent them from interfering with your work, especially if you use your hands often. Scratching yourself is also a possibility with long nails.
Since nails are continually growing, we can be sure that it gets nutrients from the food that we eat. This is why we should eat the right kinds of food if we want to maintain strong and healthy nails. This is especially important if you have soft nails as you will need to supplement your diet with foods rich in calcium, proteins and zinc to make your nails stronger. Drinking lots of water also helps keep nails hydrated which is also needed for healthy nails.
Application of nail polish should be done properly. First, a base coat should be applied which will serve as the protection for your nails. Once this has hardened, apply a topcoat which will make you nails shiny and glossy. You should also check the ingredients of nail polishes before buying them as some may contain carcinogens like formaldehyde. Acetone based polish remover should also be avoided as this can be a cause for dry nails.
Another thing that you should remember about nail polish is that it contains a lot of synthetic chemicals that can potentially harm your nails with constant use. So even though it has a protective function, you should rest your nails from nail polish from time to time, lest you want to develop soft, yellowish nails due to the prolonged exposure to chemicals.
Filing of nails should also be done properly. It is better to file nails after putting on nail polish as this gives your nails added strength and protection. This way, breaking of your nails when filing is avoided. In addition to this, filing should also be done in one direction only to reduce the chances that your nail will break due to opposite forces acting on the nail.
Some habits that you should also avoid to protect your nails are nail-biting, as well as using your nails as tools. This exposes your nails to mechanical damage especially if you do it very often. When handling detergents and chemicals, it is recommended that you wear gloves to protect both your hands and nails from the effects of these chemicals.
Having good nail care habits will help you give a good impression with the people that you meet and work with. All you will need to do is keep them trim and clean, and follow the advice given here so that your nails will remain nice and presentable.
