Injuries To Babies From A Group B Strep Infection

One common type of claim litigated by a medical negligence lawyer is the birth injury claim. They usually fall into one of four main categories. To start with, there are the cases which involve a physical injury to the baby. Next, there are the cases which involve birth defects. Genetic abnormalities are examples of this type of case. Third, are the cases that involve a stillbirth. Finally, there are the cases that involve the death of the child a brief time following birth .

Below we consider one of the cases that involve injuries. The injuries can be severe and can include blindness, loss of hearing, cognitive and physical limitations, as well as seizure disorders. Even when the child survive the injuries can leave the child with life long disabilities. Take, for example, injuries from an infection.  One kind of of infection that poses a serious risk to newborns is from a group b strep bacterial infection.

A newborn’s immune system is underdeveloped. Group b strep can thus develop into sepsis which is a condition in which the infection spreads throughout the baby’s body resulting in serious organ damage and even organ failure. Another possible complication is pneumonia. The infection also places the baby at risk of developing meningitis which can leave the child with various lifelong problems including cerebral palsy and seizure disorders. If a doctor does not screen the mother for group b strep at the appropriate point in the pregnancy, does not administer antibiotics while the mother is in labor if the mother tested positive or has a history of group b strep from a prior pregnancy or has known risk factors, or fails to monitor the newborn and administer antibiotics as necessary if they were not administered even though they were called for during labor or the newborn has symptoms of infection that doctor may be liable.
